When you were invited for an interview, did you do your research on the company? Is it necessary to know where the business was founded or what their gross revenue is?
Do you remember being invited for your first interview for the job you are working in now?
When researching on “interview tips”, most websites highlight to “do your research”. Even though you probably don’t remember anything after you’ve gone through that interview, it is still important to know what you’re getting in to.
Think of it this way…
If Woolworths employees were to know that in the future the business would go bust, would they have still applied for the job?
Or what about Blockbusters? It’s such an irony that they went bust and that word forms part of their name, right?
However, the point of the matter is: if you know something isn’t going to work out in the future, you wouldn’t waste your present time getting involved with or in it.
But let’s make this into an argument. If we were to play the Devil’s Advocate and say that it is not important to know anything about your company; what would be the for and against statements for this?
- It’s not necessary to know your company
- True – it’s only a job; it’s there to pay the bills and have a little bit left over to treat yourself.
- True – it’s not a lifelong commitment. It’s only for now until I move onto something else. So what’s the point of knowing the ins and outs of the business?
- True – I’m just here to do my job; start @9 and finish @5. That’s it.
- True – it’s none of my business.
- It is very beneficial to know about your company
- True – if you don’t know about the company that you’re working for, then you don’t know your worth or value to it
- True – if you want to work your way up the ladder in the business, then it’s important to know everything about it
- True – if you want to know if there’s a future in the business, then get to know it!
- True – it’s only important to know about the business, if you want to stay in it. If it’s just a job, that’s all it will be.
All in all, it’s important to know who you work for, what you’re working for and why you’re working for it. Why?
So that ultimately, you know what you’re adding to the company. That way you know what you’re worth.
If you don’t think that’s important, then it’s just a job. But if you want to know more, it’s more like a step to your career or maybe a career is exactly what it is.
